The Pew Research Center Releases New Study of Race Relations in the United States
More than 80 percent of Blacks who have attended college say that they personally have been discriminated against due to their race. Less than 60 percent of Blacks who have not enrolled in college say they personally have faced racial discrimination.
The New President of South Carolina State University
James E. Clark was named the 12th president of South Carolina State University. Clark, a successful businessman, has been a member of the board of trustees of South Carolina State University for the past year. He has also been chair of the University of South Carolina Research Foundation for the past three years.
University of Houston Researcher Examines Death Ideation Among Black Children
A new study led by Rheeda Walker, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, finds that about one third of African American children had thoughts of death or dying. Death ideation can be a predictor of suicide.
Willie Larkin Steps Down as President of Grambling State University
After just less than one year in office as the ninth president of Grambling State University in Louisiana, Willie D. Larkin has resigned his post. While President Larkin resigned, his comments appear to show that he was being forced out of his position.
University Study Finds a Major Racial Gap in State Judgeship Appointments
The authors assembled a database of more than 10,000 state judges who hear about 90 percent of all court cases in the United States, according to the authors. They found that only seven states had a judiciary that mirrored the racial and ethnic diversity of the state's population.
Haywood B. Joiner Jr. to Lead Louisiana State University-Alexandria
Dr. Joiner, who will become interim chancellor in late August, is chair of the department of allied health at the university. He has also been serving as interim chair of the department of business administration at the Alexandria campus.
The New Director of the Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University
Gena Flynn is the new director of the Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She was director of academic support at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. From 2007 to 2014, Dr. Flynn served on the staff at Columbia College in Chicago.
Accrediting Agency Updates Status of Two Alabama HBCUs
Alabama State University in Montgomery was removed from accreditation warning status by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Tuskegee University will remain on warning status for another year.
Four African Americans Named to New Administrative Posts at Colleges and Universities
The appointees are Norm Jones at Amherst College in Massachusetts, Loretta McDonald at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Keith W. McIntosh at the University of Richmond in Virginia, and Parris Carter at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Voorhees College to Offer a New Bachelor’s Degree Program in Psychology
The new major will focus on providing students with the opportunity to understand major theoretical approaches, findings, and historical trends in psychology and to familiarize them with research methods in psychology, including design, data analysis, and interpretation.
Award Named After Black Scholar at Texas A&M University
The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education has created an award to honor Christine A. Stanley, the vice president and associate provost for diversity and professor of higher education administration in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University.
Florida A&M University to Build a New Living / Learning Community
The new living/learning community will be the sixth such residence at the university. It will provide housing for 440 students. Living/learning communities house students with similar majors or interests.
Five Black Scholars Are Taking on New Assignments
Jose Cossa is joining the faculty at Vanderbilt. Michael Woods at Hamilton College and Dean E. Robinson at the University of Massachusetts were named to endowed professorships. Derek Conrad Murray of the University of California, Santa Cruz was named to an editorial board and UConn's Michael Bradford was named chair of dramatic arts.
In Memoriam: Austin Chesterfield Clarke, 1934-2016
Clarke was a native of Barbados. He came to Canada in 1955 to study at the University of Toronto. The author of 11 novels, he taught at Yale University, Duke University, and the University of Texas.
