Racial Incidents Reported on Three University Campuses

towson_university_logoThe campus police at Towson University in Maryland reported that a racial incident occurred at the Liberal Arts Cafe on campus. A White male student became angry with a Black woman employee of the cafe when she did not hear his order. The White male reportedly said “Your people don’t know how to listen.” He then threw his money at the employee.

According to statements given the police, the White students had past encounters at the cafe including using racial slurs directed at Black employees. The cafe had instructed employees not to serve the student. Police had also received reports that the same student was abusive to other university personnel. The police stated that the actions of the student did not amount to a crime.

bu-law-300Large posters with pro-Nazi and anti-Black messages were found at the entrance of the Yawkey Center for Student Services on the campus of Boston University in Massachusetts. One of the posters read “Black Lives Don’t Matter.” Similar posters were placed at businesses near the university campus.

In a letter to the campus community, Robert A. Brown, president of Boston University, stated that the incident is “a reminder that the human capacity for hate is deeply rooted and never as far from our daily lives as we would like or hope.

UIowaAn African American first-year student at the University of Iowa, said that he was beaten by a group of three White men who called him a “nigger” during the attack. The Black man, from suburban Chicago, said that he had broken teeth and needed stitches to close wounds after the attack.

Update: After a police investigation, it was determined that a hate crime did not occur. Police said the Black man was intoxicated and was the instigator of several incidents, one of which involved the use of a racial slur.
