Racist Graffiti Painted on the Walls of a Chapel at Northwestern University

northwesternlogoTwo White first-year students at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, were charged with hate crime violations for spray-painting racial and homophobic slurs on the walls of Alice Millar Chapel on campus. The university’s surveillance cameras showed the two men entering the chapel with spray-paint cans and the students reportedly confessed to the vandalism to university police.

The graffiti included swastikas, a slur directed at African Americans, and the name “Trump.”

In a message to the campus community, Morton Shapiro, president of Northwestern University, stated that “Northwestern is committed to creating a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all of our students, faculty and staff. This disgusting act of hatred violates the deepest values and core commitments of our University and is an affront to us all.”
