Yale University Reports a Sharp Rise in African American Applicants

yaleAccording to the latest JBHE annual survey of entering students at the nation’s highest-ranked research universities, Blacks make up 10.9 percent of the entering class at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. There are 148 Black students in the first-year class at Yale, an increase of 5 percent from a year ago.

Yale reports that over the past four years, the number of applications it has received from all U.S. high school students has increased by 5 percent. But during the same period, the number of applicants it has received from African American students is up 36 percent.

Jeremiah Quinlan, dean of undergraduate admissions, stated that “the increasing diversity of the application pool aligns with Yale’s outreach policy, which is focused on reaching applicants and communities where students have not typically considered schools like Yale.”

Last year, there were 3,171 Black students who applied to Yale. Only 4.7 percent of those Black students who applied to Yale in 2015 are now members of the entering class. Yale does not publicly disclose the number of Black students it accepts for admission.
