The Youngest Ph.D. Recipient in the History of Delaware State University

Jalaal HayesJalaal A. Hayes recently was awarded a Ph.D. in applied chemistry at Delaware State University in Dover. At 22 years of age, Dr. Hayes is the youngest student to be awarded a doctorate in the history of Delaware State University. His dissertation was entitled “Thermodynami and Kinetic Studies of Alkali Metal Doped-Lithium Amide-Magnesium Hydride Hydrogen Storage System.”

Dr. Hayes’ parents are both librarians. His mother works at a high school in Philadelphia and his father is dean of library services at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Dr. Hayes graduated from high school at the age of 15. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and general science at The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He was 18 years old when he graduated from college.

In Memoriam: Faith Ringgold, 1930-2024

Ringgold was a mixed media artist, best known for her narrative quilts which centered around African American and women's representation. She was a professor emerita of art with the University of California, San Diego where she taught for 15 years.
