Black Canadian Woman From the University of Pennsylvania Wins a Rhodes Scholarship

Debi Ogunrinde 1JBHE recently reported that four African American women won Rhodes Scholarships. (See JBHE post here.) But Rhodes Scholarships for study at Oxford University in England are awarded to students from several countries around the world.

Adebisi (Debi) Ogunrinde, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, was awarded one of the 11 Rhodes Scholarships from Canada. She is a resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will graduate next spring with a dual bachelor’s degree in international studies from the School of Arts & Sciences and in economics from the Wharton School.

In high school Ogunrinde led the Canadian national debate team and she also coached the Zimbabwe national debate team. Ogunrinde will pursue a master’s degree in social anthropology and a master’s degree in public policy at the University of Oxford.

Dr. Hightower was a professor of marketing at his alma mater, historically Black Florida A&M University, where he taught for over two decades. He also served the university as the Centennial Eminent Scholar Chair and Professor of Marketing and Facility Management.
