statueA statue of abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was recently installed in a new square on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park. The new square (See earlier JBHE post.), completed in September, features quotations from Douglass displayed on a steel wall. The wall is surrounded by paving squares, flower beds, benches, and accent lighting. The new statue completes the project.

The statue of Douglass is eight-feet tall and is mounted on a three-foot tall base. It weighs about 1,000 pounds. The statue was designed in Ireland and cast in bronze in Wales. It was officially dedicated at a ceremony on November 18.
