After Campus Protests, a Backlash of Racist Incidents Occur on College Campuses

No HateIt comes as no surprise that in the aftermath of campus protests on issues dealing with race, there has been a backlash, with several race-related incidents occurring on campuses across the nation.

At the University of Missouri, where student protests forced the resignation of the system president, vandals spray painted over the word “Black” on the building sign for the Black Culture Center on campus. Also, a student reported that he heard someone yell at a Black student on campus, “Black motherfuckers, you’re not welcome here.”

At Bowie State University, a historically Black educational institution in Maryland, a large swastika was spray-painted on the Martin Luther King Jr. Communications Art Center.

At Howard University, campus security was heightened after a someone identifying him or herself as a disgruntled University of Missouri students stated online that they were going to kill Black students on the Howard campus. “After all,” the person stated online, “it’s not murder if they’re Black.”

Signs on the campus of Yale University were defaced with slogans referring to Black criminality, violence, and rape.

An anonymous posting on Twitter threatened to “kill every Black male and female at Kean University” in Union, New Jersey. The tweets occurred about the same time that a rally was being held on the Kean campus in support of Black student protesters across the nation. Update: After police investigation, it was determined that a former student, who is Black, allegedly fabricated the threats in an effort fuel the campus protest movement at Kean.

Black tape was placed over the faces of African American professors on photographs hanging outside a lecture hall at Harvard Law School.

  1. See the link about Iowa State University that is having racial problems and this has been the case for a long time. There are many minority administrators and faculty of color leaving Iowa State University. A high level minority female administrator was let go. This needs to be exposed. Faculty, students, and staff have all experienced racism from being called the N word and other racial slurs. The light needs to be shown on this school. The president of this institution said at an open forum on race, discrimination and harassment the he sees no color. The president also has said to administrators and staff that black and Mexican Americans should drop the hyphen name and just be Americans.
