Race Discrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Saint Mary’s College in California
Filed in Campus Racial Incidents on October 23, 2015
A racial discrimination lawsuit has been filed against Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California. While the suit was filed by a professor of Asian Indian descent, documentation filed in the case reveals that Black and other minority faculty, staff members, and students also believe they have been mistreated by the college.
According to a report in the East Bay Express, Linda Saulsby, an African American woman who was director of the liberal and civic studies program at the college, wrote a letter to college administrators stating that “I have been subjected to verbal and threatening intimidation, disrespect, and never-ending strategizing to undermine my efforts. A colleague stated to me, ‘this is hard place for people of color, especially Black people.'”
In 2014, Blacks made up 4 percent of the student body at the college. Of the 211 full-time faculty members, five, or 2.4 percent, are Black, according to 2014 data.
