Pamela Hammond to Step Down as Interim President of Virginia State University

pamela-hammondPamela V. Hammond, interim president of Virginia State University, has announced that she will step down on December 31. Dr. Hammond has been serving as interim president since January 1, 2015. She is the first woman to serve as president of the university. Before taking on the responsibilities of president of Virginia State, Dr. Hammond was provost at Hampton University in Virginia.

The university formed a search committee for a new president in December 2014. It continues to review candidates. The board of visitors of Virginia State said that it would appoint a new interim president until a permanent president is selected.

Dr. Hammond is a graduate of Tuskegee University in Alabama, where she majored in nursing. She holds a master’s degree in maternal-child nursing from the University of Maryland-Baltimore and a doctorate in urban services from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
