The New Leader of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University

winborneWayne Winborne is the new director of the Institute of Jazz Studies in the John Cotton Dana Library on the Newark, New Jersey, campus of Rutgers University. The institute was founded in 1952 by Marshall Stearns, a prominent jazz scholar. It found a permanent home at Rutgers University in 1966.

The mission of the Institute of Jazz Studies is “to collect, preserve, and make accessible the heritage of jazz, an American art form that has been embraced by the world.” The institute is the repository of more than 150,000 jazz recordings and 6,000 books on the subject. The institute also houses dozens of instruments played by some of the great jazz musicians.

For the past five years, Winborne has run the Winborne Group, a consulting firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Previously, he was vice president for business diversity outreach at Prudential Financial Corporation in Newark.

Winborne is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a graduate degree from New York University. He also spent a summer studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
