Three African Americans in New Teaching Positions

ThompsonMarcus Thompson was given the title of Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Thompson, along with two colleagues, are the first faculty members to be given this title since 2008. There are now 13 Institute Professors at MIT. Professor Thompson joined the faculty at MIT in 1973 as an assistant professor of music. In 1995, he became the Robert R. Taylor Professor of Music.

Professor Thompson is an accomplished viola artist who has performed with many of the world’s great orchestras. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the Julliard School in New York City.

gunnAlana Gunn was appointed an assistant professor of social work at Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York System. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Development and Research Institutes in New York City.

Dr. Gunn is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where she majored in urban studies. She holds a master of social work degree, a master of public policy degree and a Ph.D. in social service administration, all from the University of Chicago.

waymerDamion Waymer was appointed associate professor of communication at the University of Cincinnati. He will also serve as associate provost for faculty recruitment and development at the university. Since 2013, he has been an associate professor of communication at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Waymer is a graduate of the College of Charleston in South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in communication from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
