Four Black Scholars Honored With Prestigious Awards

danielsGeorge L. Daniels an associate professor of journalism and an assistant dean and chief diversity officer for the College of Communication & Information Sciences at the University of Alabama, has been selected to receive the 2015 Robert P. Knight Multicultural Recruitment Award from the Scholastic Journalism Division of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Dr. Daniels will be honored at the 2015 AEJMC Conference in San Francisco on August 8.

Dr. Daniels has been on the faculty at the University of Alabama since 2003. He is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Georgia.

cummingsLawanda Cummings, chair of the social science department at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, received the Outstanding Professional Paper Award from the Southeastern Psychological Association. Professor Cummings was honored at the association’s annual conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Her award-winning paper was entitled “Black Women in Stem: The Role of Contextual Supports in Academic Self-Efficacy.”

Dr. Cummings holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in community psychology, and a Ph.D. in community psychology, all from Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Matthews_1Hewitt W. Matthews, dean of the College of Pharmacy and senior vice president for health sciences at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, received the Larry L. Braden Meritorious Service Award from the Georgia Pharmacy Association. Dr. Matthews was honored at the association’s annual convention in Amelia Island, Florida.

Dr. Matthews joined the faculty at Mercer University in 1973 and has served as dean since 1990. He is a graduate of Mercer University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

WrightDawn J. Wright, a professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University and chief scientist at the Environmental Systems Research Institute in Redlands, California, has been selected to receive the Randolph W. and Cecile T. Bromery Award for the Minorities from the Geological Society of America. Dr. Wright will be honored at the society’s annual meeting in Baltimore this coming November.

Dr. Wright is a graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois. She holds a master’s degree in oceanography from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. in physical geography and marine geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

    I was delighted (though not surprised!) to read that you received this year’s Outstanding Professional Paper Award from the Southeastern Psychological Association at its annual conference held on Hilton Head, South Carolina.
