The Next Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro

gilliamThe board of governors of the University of North Carolina System has chosen Franklin D. Gilliam Jr. as the next chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He will take office on September 8.

According to the latest U.S. Department of Education data, the university enrolls nearly 15,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Blacks make up 25 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Gilliam has been serving as professor of public policy and political science and dean of the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1986 and was appointed dean in 2008. Earlier in his career, Dr. Gilliam taught at Grinnell College in Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Gilliam is the author of Farther to Go: Readings and Cases in African American Politics (Harcourt Brace, 2001).

A native of Bloomington, Minnesota, Dr. Gilliam is a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Iowa.
