The New Provost at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina

vannNewkirkVann R. Newkirk was named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. He has been serving as associate provost for academic affairs, dean of graduate studies, and professor of history at Alabama A&M University.

Dr. Newkirk is the author of Lynching in North Carolina: A History, 1865-1941 (McFarland, 2008), a book which won the Willie Parker Peace History Award. He is also the author of New Life for Historically Black Colleges: A 21-Century Perspective (McFarland, 2012).

Professor Newkirk is a graduate of Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina, where he majored in sociology. Dr. Newkirk holds a master’s degree in history from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and a master of library and information science degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham. He earned a Ph.D. in history at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
