The First African American Dean at North Greenville University

thompsonH. Paul Thompson was named dean of the College of Humanities at North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina. He is the first African American dean in the university’s history. The Christian university enrolls about 2,500 students and Blacks make up 7 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Thompson joined the faculty at North Greenville University in 2006. He is a professor of history and has been serving as chair of the history department. Professor Thompson is the author of A Most Stirring and Significant Episode: Religion and the Rise and Fall of Prohibition in Black Atlanta, 1865-1887 (Northern Illinois University Press, 2013).

Professor Thompson is a graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He holds a master’s degree from Montclair State University in New Jersey and a Ph.D. in history from Emory University in Atlanta.
