Historically Black Edward Waters College Sees a Surge in Applications

edward-waters-collegeEdward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, has seen a huge increase in applications this year. The historically Black college has received more than 3,000 applications, up from 1,800 a year ago.

Joel Walker, director of admissions, reports that he and his small staff made a concerted recruitment effort, particularly at local high schools in the Jacksonville area and throughout northern Florida. And the recruitment effort included initiatives to outreach to non-Black students.

Edward Waters College hopes to enroll more than 1,200 this coming fall. The latest data from the U.S. Department of Education for the Fall of 2013 shows enrollments of 862 students with Blacks making up 92 percent of the student body.
