ncatsuNorth Carolina A&T State University, the historically Black educational institution in Greensboro has agreed to assume ownership of Memorial Stadium from the city of Greensboro. The university will also receive $1.5 million in funding to renovate the exterior of the facility.

Memorial Stadium was built in 1926 to honor those who gave their lives during World War I. Prior to 1981, it was home to the North Carolina A&T University football team. It then housed a minor league baseball team until 2005. Since that time the stadium has fallen into disrepair, although it is still the home for the university’s baseball team.

North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. said that an additional $4 million to $6 million will be necessary to fully refurbish the stadium. He hopes to secure grants and donations to fund the project.
