Two Black Scholars in New Teaching Roles

Thomas-Sayers-Ellis_WBThomas Sayers Ellis is serving as the Sterling Brown Professor of English and Humanities at Howard University in Washington, D.C., for the spring semester. The professorship is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and is part of an ongoing effort to raise funds for a permanent endowed professorship to honor Sterling Brown.

Thomas Sayers Ellis is an assistant professor of writing at Sarah Lawrence College. His most recent book is Skin Inc.: Identity Repair Poems (Graywolf Press, 2013). He holds a master of fine arts degree from Brown University.

Jones WalkerCheryl Jones-Walker was promoted to associate professor of educational studies and associate professor of Black studies at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She was also granted tenure.

Her current research is focused on understanding the perspectives of various shareholders (superintendent, school board, and teacher union representatives) in the re-design of mid-sized urban districts. Dr. Jones-Walker is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She holds a Ph.D. in educational studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
