Howard University Reports a Huge Increase in Applicants

howard-university-logoIn an era when many historically Black colleges and universities have faced declining enrollments, Howard University, in Washington, D.C., reports a huge increase in its applicant pool. So far this year, Howard has received 28,466 applications, up from 22,913 a year ago. This is a 24 percent increase. The applicant pool includes students from all 50 states and 32 foreign nations.

LaTrice A. Byam, director of admissions at Howard University, explained that “while there are many factors that may contribute to the University’s increase in applications, the overarching attribute is the University’s strong brand and legacy of producing leaders in virtually all industries. The diversity of our undergraduate and graduate programs clearly sets us apart from peer intuitions.”

FrederickmHoward University President Wayne A.I. Frederick added: “A Howard University education is in high demand. As these numbers demonstrate, our work every day to ensure the University’s curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in today’s marketplace is resonating with prospective students.”
