Emery Brown Is Now a Member of All Three National Academies

Brown_EmeryEmery N. Brown, the Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Brown is also the Warren M. Zapoli Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Brown was honored by the National Academy of Engineering for his experimental research toward understanding the neuroscience of how anesthetic drugs act in the brain to create the states of general anesthesia.

Professor Brown is one of only several scholars who have been elected to all three branches of the National Academies: the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering. While there is no official data on the race of members, it is believed that Dr. Brown is the first African American to be named to all three branches.

Dr. Brown holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. He is also a graduate of Harvard Medical School.

This year, 67 new members were inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. It appears that Dr. Brown is the only African American among the new members.
