An Increase in Black Applicants at the University of California

uc_logoThe nine undergraduate campuses of the University of California received a record 193,873 applications for the class entering this coming fall. There were 102,994 individuals from California who applied to one or more campuses.

There were 6,268 African American applicants from California that applied to at least one of the nine campuses. They made up 6.1 percent of all applicants from California. This was up from 5.9 percent a year ago.

Blacks made up 7 percent of all California applicants at the Riverside and Merced campuses. At the flagship Berkeley campus, Blacks were 5.8 percent of all California applicants. This was up slightly from a year ago. At the prestigious campus at Los Angeles, Blacks were 6.1 percent of all California applicants, up from 5.8 percent a year ago.

Due to state law, race cannot be considered in applications to state university. As a result, in 2014, Blacks were 5.7 percent of all California applicants to Berkeley but Blacks made up only 2.9 percent of the entering class.
