The Higher Education of a Rising Star in the Legal World

KrugerRecently, Leondra R. Kruger was appointed to the California Supreme Court by Governor Jerry Brown. Kruger is only 38 years old and will be one of the youngest people to serve on the state’s highest court.

A native of Glendale, California, Kruger is the daughter of two pediatricians. She is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, where she was editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Review.

Kruger joined the Office of Solicitor General of the United States during the administration of George W. Bush. There she argued 12 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2013, she left the Office of the Solicitor General to become deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice.

If confirmed, Kruger will be the second African American woman to serve on California’s highest court. Due to her young age and her legal reputation, Kruger is considered a potential future nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

  1. Great choice by Gov. Brown! It’s wonderful to have such an accomplished Black atty. on the Cal Supreme Ct. The State Bar of California has an abysmal 2.7% Black membership. We need to increase our numbers.
