Honors for Four Black Scholars

tanisaFordTanisha C. Ford, an assistant professor of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, received the A. Elizabeth Taylor Prize for the best article on southern women’s history from the Southern Association for Women Historians. Her article “SNCC Women: Denim and the Politics of Dress,” was published in the August 2013 issue of the Journal of Southern History.

Dr. Ford holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Indiana University in Bloomington. She also earned a master’s degree in Afro-American studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Brown, AlfredaAlfreda Brown, vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Kent State University in Ohio, has been selected to receive the Diversity Visionary Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Dr. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York, a master’s degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and a doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern University.

harveyWilliam R. Harvey, president of Hampton University in Virginia, received the 2014 Educational Leadership Award from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Dr. Harvey has been president of Hampton University since 1978. Prior to coming to Hampton, Dr. Harvey held administrative posts at Harvard University, Tuskegee University, and Fisk University. He is a graduate of Talladega College in Alabama and holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Harvard University.

DionneCrossDionne Cross Francis, an associate professor in the School of Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, received the K-12 Promotion of Education Award at the recent 2014 Women of Color STEM Conference in Detroit.

Dr. Cross Francis is a graduate of the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. She holds a master’s degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.
