New Teaching Posts for Six African American Scholars

clevelandChristena Cleveland is a new associate professor of anthropology, sociology, and reconciliation studies at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is the author of Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces That Keep Us Apart (IVP Books, 2013).

Dr. Cleveland is a graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

taylorJacquelyn Taylor was promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure at the Yale School of Nursing. She is the first woman of color to be promoted through the ranks to a tenured position in the 90-year history of the nursing school. Prior to coming to Yale, Dr. Taylor served as a faculty member and coordinator of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Taylor holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Wash-BrownAndrea Washington-Brown is a new clinical assistant professor of costuming in the School of Theatre and Dance at West Virginia University. Previously, she was an assistant professor of costume technology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She has designed costumes for the theatre departments at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Wayne State University in Detroit, and Princeton University in New Jersey.

Washington-Brown is a graduate of the University of Memphis. She holds a master of fine arts degree from Wayne State University.

blanche_b_cookBlanche B. Cooke was appointed assistant professor at the Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. For the past eight years, she has been an assistant U.S. Attorney in Nashville, Tennessee, specializing in drug and sex trafficking prosecutions.

Cooke is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and the University of Michigan Law School.

De-BarrosEric L. De Barros was appointed assistant professor of English at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was a visiting assistant professor of English at the State University of New York at Oswego.

Dr. De Barros holds a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Illinois.

ecarsonEmmett D. Carson was named the inaugural holder of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Chair on Community Foundations at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. He is president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Dr. Carson will serve as visiting chair holder until a permanent faculty member is named.

Dr. Carson is a graduate of Morehouse College. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in public and international affairs from Princeton University.
