University of Alabama’s New Effort to Boost the Diversity of Its Business Students

culverhouseThe Culverhouse College of Commerce at the University of Alabama has launched a new initiative aimed at increasing the diversity of incoming students. The Culverhouse Majors Awareness Program is holding a six-day camp that will bring a diverse group 30 rising high school seniors from Alabama and Georgia to campus.

The goal of the camp is provide the students with a better understanding of business and how Culverhouse can help them succeed. Students will participate in sessions on accounting, finance, economics, management, marketing, and information systems with University of Alabama faculty and business professionals.

J. Michael Hardin, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce, stated, “we have been recruiting and conducting outreach for 10 years, but this year we decided to focus our efforts on students with a wide variety of backgrounds.  We feel like this is what is most important – bringing in talented students with different backgrounds to increase the diversity of the university and Culverhouse.”
