UCLA Mural on “The Black Experience” Again Sees the Light of Day

A project to restore a mural painted in 1970 by seven Black artists at the University of California, Los Angeles has been completed. The 10-by-27-foot mural was painted on a wall in the Ackerman Union.

A wall erected during renovations to the building in 1992 had kept the mural from public view for more than two decades. In 2012 the Afrikan Student Union at UCLA asked that the mural be restored and made available for public viewing. A reception was held to unveil the restoration with two of the original artists – Neville Garrick and Helen Singleton – in attendance.
