Deborah Barnes to Lead the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University

Dr.-Deborah-BarnesDeborah H. Barnes was named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University in Mississippi. She has been serving as associate dean. Dr. Barnes joined the faculty at Jackson State in October 2013. Previously, she was interim associate dean of university studies and an associate professor at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.

From 1992-2002, Dr. Barnes was a faculty member in the English Department at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. In 1999, she became the first African American awarded tenure at Gettysburg College. After leaving Gettysburg College in 2002, Dr. Barnes served as the director of the Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations and Associate Professor of Africana studies at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Dr. Barnes is a graduate of Tuskegee University in Alabama. She holds a master’s degree in African American literature from North Carolina A&T State University and a Ph.D. in English from Howard University.
