John L. Jackson, Jr. Named to Dean Position at the University of Pennsylvania

Jackson JohnJohn L. Jackson, Jr. was named dean of the School of Social Policy and Practice at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jackson is the Richard Perry University Professor and senior adviser for diversity in the Office of the Provost at the university. He will become dean on July 1.

Professor Jackson is a cultural anthropologist who has written extensively on the impact of mass media on urban life and racial and ethnic diasporas. He joined the faculty at Penn in 2006 after teaching in the cultural anthropology department at Duke University.

harlemworldDr. Jackson is the author of three books: Harlemworld: Doing Race and Class in Contemporary Black America (University of Chicago Press, 2001); Real Black: Adventures in Racial Sincerity (University of Chicago Press, 2005) and; Racial Paranoia: The Unintended Consequences of Political Correctness (Basic Civitas, 2008).

Dr. Jackson is a summa cum laude graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. He holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in New York City.
