New Award-Winning Film Documents Stories of English Women Who Married Black GIs

vhjacksonValerie Hill-Jackson, clinical associate professor in the department of teaching, learning, and culture at Texas A&M University, received the 2013 Upton Sinclair Award from the Haberman Educational Foundation. Dr. Hill-Jackson was honored for her documentary film Tiger Brides: Memories of Love and War from the G.I. Brides of Tiger Bay.

The documentary, which will have its U.S. film debut in late February, tells the story of six women from the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff, Wales, who fell in love and married African American servicemen during World War II. Professor Hill-Jackson is the daughter-in-law of one of the Tiger Bay brides.

Dr. Hill-Jackson is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey. She earned a master’s degree at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, and a doctorate in educational leadership from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
