African Americans With Alternative Educational Credentials

Census_Bureau_seal.svgThe U.S. Census Bureau has recently released a report detailing the number of American who have obtained educational credentials other than degrees. These credentials include professional certification or licensure or an educational certificate of some kind.

The data shows that 21 percent of Black adults in the United States have some form or alternative educational credential. For White Americans the figure is 25.6 percent. More than 18 percent of African American adults have obtain professional certification or license and 8.2 percent have been awarded an educational certificate.

Most of the African Americans who have obtained alternative credentials are college educated. For African Americans with a bachelor’s degree but no graduate degree, nearly 30 percent have a professional certification or license and 11.5 percent have an educational certificate. For African Americans with an advanced degree, 48.6 percent have professional certification or license and 15.8 percent have an educational certificate.
