Two Black Scholars Join the Art and Architecture Faculty at Brown University

Brown University has announced that there are 13 new faculty members in its humanities division this fall. Two of the new hires are Black.

Martin1Courtney J. Martin is an assistant professor of the history of art and architecture. She is teaching twentieth-century British art. Dr. Martin was assistant professor of art history at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Martin is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree from Stony Brook University of the State University of New York system and a Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University.

Osayimwese1Itohan Osayimwese is also a new assistant professor of history of art and architecture. She was an assistant professor of the history of art and architecture at Ithaca College in New York. She was born and raised in West Africa, with one parent from Nigeria and one from the Caribbean.

Dr. Osayimwese is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She has a master’s degree from Rice University and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in the history of architecture from the University of Michigan.
