Blacks Fare Better in Transfer Enrollments at Berkeley

uc-berkeleyThe University of California system accepts a large number of transfer students from the vast community college system in the state. At the University of California at Berkeley, there were 15,989 applicants from transfer students this year. Among this group were 744 African American transfer applicants. Thus, Blacks made up 4.7 percent of all transfer applicants.

The university accepted 158 Black transfer applicants and 114 of these students enrolled this fall. Blacks make up 4.2 percent of all transfer students who enrolled this fall. As is the case with all admissions decisions at state universities in California, transfer decisions must be made without the consideration of race.

The Black percentage of transfer students is significantly higher than the percentage of Blacks in the first-year class at Berkeley. African Americans were only 2.6 percent of the first-year students who enrolled this fall at Berkeley.

I am a transfer student; in a few years, I will be known as Dr. Taheerah Mujahid and it is because UC Berkeley believes in my ability to accomplish my dreams. I will make this a better place because of my presence.
