New U.S. Ambassador Taught at Dartmouth College and Howard University

mushingiTulinabo Mushingi is the new U.S. ambassador to the African nation of Burkina Faso. A native of Congo, he is the first African-born naturalized U.S. citizen to return to Africa as an ambassador.

Mushingi is a former lecturer at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. In 1983 he was hired to teach Swahili to Dartmouth students who were going to participate in a study abroad program in Kenya. His daughter Furaha graduated from Dartmouth in 2009.

Dr. Mushingi earned a Ph.D. in linguistics at Georgetown University. He has also earned a master’s degree and taught at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
