Two African American Scholars Honored for Service

Cheryl A. Swanier, an associate professor of computer science at Fort Valley State University in Georgia, received the Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award from the National Center for Women and Information Technology.

Dr. Swanier also serves as the faculty adviser to the student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery and the program coordinator for Students in Technology, Academia, Research, and Service (STARS) program.

Brown_ChristopherM. Christopher Brown II, president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi, has been chosen to receive the 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the Commission on Access, Diversity, and Excellence of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. He is the first president of a historically Black college or university to receive the award. President Brown will receive the honor at the APLU’s annual meeting in Washington on November 10.

Dr. Brown is a graduate of South Carolina State University. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate from Pennsylvania State University.
