Two Black Scholars in New Faculty Roles

washingtonBarbara Washington, an associate professor of special education, was named interim chair of the department of adolescent, career, and special education in the College of Education at Murray State University in Kentucky. She joined the Murray State faculty in 2007.

Dr. Washington holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in special education, all from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

abeldaleE. Dale Abel was assigned the John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is also serving as director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the university. Dr. Abel was a professor of medicine and biochemistry at the University of Utah.

Dr. Abel completed his medical training at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. Chosen as a Rhodes Scholar, he earned a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Oxford.

In Memoriam: O. Jerome Green, 1954-2024

President of historically Black Shorter College O. Jerome Green passed way unexpectedly on April 8. Since he became president in 2012, the college has experienced record-breaking enrollment and graduation rates, created new academic programs, and established the STEM Center for Academic Excellence.
