Five African Americans in New Administrative Positions in Higher Education

Sheila T. ChamplinSheila T. Champlin is the new assistant vice chancellor for communications and marketing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. Since 2006, she has been director of the department.

Champlin is a summa cum laude graduate of St. Louis University and holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Professor Derrick YatesDerrick K. Yates was named director of bands at Stillman College in Alabama. He was the interim director of bands at Alabama A&M University. He has recently signed an agreement with Edwin Mellen Press to write a book entitled, Why Does Hazing Occur in Historically Black College and University Bands in the United States of America.

Yates holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Alabama A&M University.

Charlene Alexander Counseling PsychCharlene Alexander is the new associate provost for diversity at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She is also the director of the Office of Institutional Diversity and a full professor of counseling psychology. She joined the faculty at Ball State in 1997.

A native of Trinidad, Dr. Alexander is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Creighton University and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska.

harperJessie Harper is the new assistant dean for faculty affairs and diversity in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She has been on the staff at the university since 2004.

Dr. Harper holds two master’s degree and an educational doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

ClaytonYvetteYvette S. Clayton is the new director of career development services at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville. She was the director of experimental programs at Chicago State University.

Clayton is a graduate of Illinois State University, where she majored in marketing. She holds an MBA from Clark Atlanta University.
