Seven African Americans in New Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Tyvi_Small_headshotTyvi Small was promoted to director of diversity and community relations in the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee. Previously, he was coordinator of diversity initiatives.

Small holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and a master’s degree in education from the University of South Florida.  He is a Ph.D. Student at the University of Tennessee.

cami_inlineCamisha Duffy was appointed executive director of the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access at Murray State University in Kentucky. For the past two years, she has served as the interim director of the Office of Equal Opportunity.

Duffy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Murray State University.

owensMichael Leo Owens, associate professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta, was elected chair of the governing board of the Urban Affairs Association. He is the author of God and Government in the Ghetto: The Politics of Church-State Collaboration in Black America (University of Chicago Press, 2007).

Dr. Owens is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from the State University of New York.

robinson-AshleyAshley Robinson was named the new director of athletics at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. He has been serving as the athletics director at Mississippi Valley State University. Previously, he was assistant vice president for athletics compliance and academic advising at Prairie View.

Robinson is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University.

Valandra-German-webValandra German was named director of the Minority Research Center on Tobacco and Addictions at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She was an assistant professor of public health at Dillard University in New Orleans.

Dr. German is a graduate of Dillard University. She holds a master’s degree from the Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine and a doctorate in public health education from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

clayton-steenClayton Steen was appointed assistant vice president for enrollment management at Bowie State University in Maryland. He was senior manager for enrollment performance management at Laureate Education Inc. Previously, he served as director of enrollment for graduate and professional studies at Stevenson University in Maryland.

Steen is a graduate of the University at Buffalo, a campus of the State University of New York system. He holds a master’s degree from Medaille College in Buffalo, New York, and is completing a doctorate in educational leadership and policy at the University at Buffalo.

billie-natashaNatasha Billie is the new dean of students at Langston University in Oklahoma. She has been serving as a teaching assistant in the department of educational administration at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Dr. Billie has previously held administrative posts at Creighton University and North Carolina A&T State University.
