William Henry Caldwell, the Longtime Director of Central State University Chorus, Retires

caldwellWilliam Henry Caldwell, chair of the department of fine and performing arts and director of the Central State University Chorus, has retired after 34 years of service to the historically Black educational institution in Wilberforce, Ohio.

During his tenure as director, the Central State University Chorus has appeared throughout the world including performances in England, France, Italy, Germany, and China.

Caldwell is a native of Demopolis, Alabama, one of 14 children in his family.

  1. Mr. Caldwell is what allowed me to have a college experience. I thank God for him and everything he ever taught me. I can hear him saying,” I teach the whole student”. That he did. Due to his teachings about life I’m able to be successful in any situation. God bless you Willy C and I love you.

  2. Wow!…what can I say about a great man who the time and patience to expose us to great vocal and choral music. We /I were privileged to be apart of the first concert tour…which happened to be the CENTENNIAL TOUR!! 1987 was the centennial year for CSU.
    I am sooo grateful to you Mr. Caldwell for teaching us how to sing properly…using diction, clarity, harmony, unison, dynamics, style, pitch, and most of all interpretation. It’s because of you that I became a choral director and also sing opera with Opera Carolina. Thank you for using your God given gifts and talents to teach, educate, mold, and develop young minds for which you were entrusted. May God richly bless you…I love you for life!!!

I’M JUST SEEING THIS.WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE AND HONOR AS HAVING YOU AS MY PROFESSOR WHILE ATTENDING CENTRAL STATE.YOUR WORK STILL LIVES ON IN ME.EVERYWHERE I SING PEOPLE ASK DID I RECEIVE VOCAL TRAINING AND IF WITH WHO? IF COURSE I MENTION YOU.I CAN GO ON AND ON WITH HOW APPRECIATIVE I AM.I TRULY MISS YOU AND THANK YOU FOR BEING APART OF MY LIFE. I LOVE YOU!
