South Carolina State University Names Three Finalists for President

scsu copySouth Carolina State University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, has announced three finalists for president of the university. The group of three finalists was selected from 25 applicants, which was later reduced to a field of seven semifinalists. All of the finalists will visit the Orangeburg campus next week for interviews with the board of trustees and public forums with the campus community.

Here are brief biographies of the three finalists.

ElzeyThomas J. Elzey is executive vice president for finance, administration, and operations at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He is the former senior vice president for finance, chief financial officer, and treasurer at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He has also been the chief financial officer at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Elzey is a graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and holds a master’s degree in public management and policy from Carnegie Mellon University.

NewtonJacksonE. Newton Jackson is the associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.  He is a former professor, department chair, and associate dean for academic affairs at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He has also served on the faculty at Howard University.

Dr. Jackson is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia. He holds a master’s degree from Grambling State University in Louisiana and a doctorate from the University of New Mexico.

McIntyreLALeonard Anthony McIntyre is the interim dean of the College of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences at South Carolina State University. He is also the director of the university’s Textbooks and Learning Materials Program. He is the former deputy superintendent of education for the state of South Carolina.

Dr. McIntyre is a graduate of Loyola University of New Orleans. He holds a master’s degree in Spanish literature from Tulane University and a doctorate in educational administration from Iowa State University.

Update: On April 18, Thomas Elzey was chosen as the next president of South Carolina State University.

      I have know Dr. Jackson as a Grad Student, Mentee, and now as a colleague. He is by far the best and most notable influence in my life… outside my parents. He is the REAL DEAL and his Presidency would enhance the quality of life at SCSU!!
