Honors for Two African American Scholars

hiltonAdriel A. Hilton, assistant vice president for inclusion initiatives at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, received the 2013 Joseph H. Silver, Sr. Leadership and Mentoring Institute Award from the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education at the recent annual meeting held in Atlanta.

Dr. Hilton is a graduate of Morehouse College. He holds a master’s degree from Florida A&M University and a doctorate from Morgan State University.

DeeneeseJonesDeneese Jones, provost at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, was selected as the recipient of the Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award from Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Jones is a 1974 alumna of Texas Woman’s University and holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in education from Texas A&M University.

Prior to being named provost at Drake last year, Dr. Jones was dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

Since he became president in 2012, the college has experienced record-breaking enrollment and graduation rates, created new academic programs, and established the STEM Center for Academic Excellence.

Federal Report Uncovers Lack of Faculty Diversity and Delay in Federal Discrimination Complaint Processing

In addition to a lack of diversity in higher education faculty, the report revealed a frequent delay by the Department of Education when referring discrimination complaints to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
