Thurgood Marshall College Fund Announces Its First President-in-Residence

jwgJohn W. Garland, the former president of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, has been chosen at the inaugural President-in-Residence at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. In this role, Garland will work with the TMCF executive team to provide strategic leadership to member institutions and to offer advice and guidance on academic policy matters. The TMCF represents 47 state-operated historically Black colleges and universities.

President Garland took the helm of Central State in September 1997. That year, there were 950 students on campus and 89 students in the first-year class. When he announced he was stepping down in 2011, total enrollments were 2,530 students and there were 724 members of the incoming class.

Garland is a Vietnam veteran who was wounded in combat. He is a graduate of Central State University and the law school at Ohio State University. Before coming to Central State University, he served as general counsel of the University of the District of Columbia and associate general counsel and associate vice president for intellectual property at the University of Virginia.
