Sylvester James Gates to Be Awarded the National Medal of Science

Pre220px-JimGates_NatureofExistencesident Obama recently announced 12 winners of the National Medal of Science. The award was created in 1959 and is administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation. The National Medal of Science recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering. Sylvester James Gates of the University of Maryland College Park is one of the 12 winners.

Sylvester James Gates is the John S. Toll Professor of Physics and director of the Center for String and Particle Theory at the University of Maryland in College Park. He has taught at the University of Maryland since 1984.

Professor Gates holds bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
