HBCU Musicians Perform at Inaugural Events

band003The Spelman College Glee Club participated in three events in the nation’s capital commemorating the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and President Obama’s second inauguration. The 50-member choral group sang at a wreath laying ceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington. Later the group sang at a service held at the Washington National Cathedral.

The next day, the Spelman College Glee Club performed at the Ambassadors Inaugural Ball held at the Carnegie Library.

The Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band was the only band from a historically Black college or university to march in the inaugural parade. The band also marched in the 2009 inaugural parade.

In Memoriam: William Hamilton Harris, 1944-2024

Dr. Harris had a long career in higher education leadership, serving as interim or permanent president of five historically Black institutions: Paine College, Texas Southern University, Alabama State University, Fort Valley State University, and Texas College.
