University of Louisville Upgrades Its Civil Rights History Tour

The Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice at the University of Louisville had updated its self-guided tour of civil rights historic sites in the city. The tour includes 22 different locations including Freedom Park which was the scene of civil rights protests in 1961, the Muhammad Ali Center, and a home in Shively which was bombed in 1954 when a Black family moved into a previously all-White neighborhood.

A printed brochure is available that includes QR codes that can be read by a smartphone which will provide additional information on each tour location. The tour map can also be found online.

Anne Braden (1924-2006) was a Louisville journalist, organizer, and educator who was among the earliest White allies of the southern civil rights movement. She taught at both Northern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville.
