Dolph Pulliman Leaving Drake University After a 24-Year Career

Dolph Pulliman, director of community outreach and development at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, has announced his intention to retire at the end of the academic year.  Pulliman began his professional career at Drake in 1989. But he originally made his mark on the university as a student during the late 1960s. He played on the university’s basketball team that finished third in the NCAA tournament.

Pulliman turned down offers to play professional basketball and became the first Black radio and television newscaster in Iowa. From 1969 to 1993, Pulliman was the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Drake University basketball.

In announcing his retirement, Pulliman said, “Drake gave me maturity and the confidence in myself as a young man coming out of the inner city. Drake made me the man I am today, so I am forever grateful to this university.”
