Record Black Enrollments at Louisiana State University

Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge reports record Black enrollments this fall. There are 3,054 Black students on campus this fall, a slight increase over the previous record that was set in 2002. But Black enrollments are up by more than 200 students from a year ago.

Admissions officials say increased recruiting at high schools in New Orleans and new recruiting efforts at predominantly Black high schools in Houston and Dallas are factors in the boost in Black enrollments.

While the progress is commendable, it must be noted that Blacks make up only 10.3 percent of the total enrollments at the flagship campus of the state university, whereas Blacks are 32.4 percent of the population in the state.
