James Hefner Returns to Take a New Role in Higher Education

James A. Hefner was named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Hefner who retired in May 2005, served as president of Tennessee State University for 14 years and was president of Jackson State University for seven years. He also is the former provost at Tuskegee University.

Dr. Hefner is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He holds a master’s degree in economics from Clark Atlanta University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Colorado. He is co-author and editor of the book Public Policy for the Black Community: Strategies and Perspectives, which was first published in 1976.
