The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a historically Black educational institution in Princess Anne, announced that it will sponsor a local spelling bee. The winner of the spelling bee will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in March.
Students at participating schools in Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties are eligible for the competition. The top two finishers at each school will advance to the regional competition on the UMES campus.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is one of only 17 colleges and universities nationwide that sponsor regional spelling bees. It is the only historically Black university to hold a regional spelling bee.
