Muriel Poston Named Dean of Faculty at Pitzer College

Muriel E. Poston was named dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. African Americans make up about 6 percent of the 1,110-member student body at Pitzer College.

Dr. Poston has been serving as division director for human resource development at the National Science Foundation. From 2005 t0 2011, she was dean of the faculty at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. She then was acting vice president of academic affairs. Before going to Skidmore, she served on the faculty at Howard University in Washington, D.C., for more than 20 years.

A plant biologist with an interest in environmental studies, Dr. Poston sits on the board of directors of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. She is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Maryland School of Law. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.

    You may not remember me but we went to elementary & high school in Danville and we were in girl scouts together.Congratulations on your appointment as dean.

    I am in academica as well. I teach at a private catholic university in New Jersey – Georgian Court University. Used to be an all girls school but we just went coed.

    Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and it is wonderful to see a former school mate in academia as well.
